Museum Seribu Percakapan

.Museum Seribu Percakapan.

[Kaliurang - Yogyakarta, 2019]

900mdpl started as a biennial site-specific art project in Kaliurang due to its close proximity to Mt.Merapi volcano in Indonesia and understanding that nothing is permanent on a moving ground. Indonesia is home to some of the most active volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire formed due to subduction zones of three main active tectonic plates. With an awareness to the unstable force of nature and how the ground is continuously moving beneath us; we propose a possibility of a transient community museum that can easily be moved from one home to another—preserving archive of the space in different forms from field notes to multimedia piece, publication, performance, and installation.

The non-permanent community museum is called The Transient Museum of a Thousand Conversations (Museum Seribu Percakapan). It is a prototype of the Museum of Kaliurang Community (MUKKA) that is created as an attempt to archive the space and as a continuous knowledge transmission of trans-generational memory. The collection of the museum is growing and being built by multidisciplinary artists together with the local community through conversation, story-telling, and oral tradition to foster transmission of transgenerational knowledge within the village. The context-specific history presented in this museum is composed of small events, socially-engaged archive of the site, and a variation of collective memory deeply rooted to the complex geographies, local wisdom, and narratives. Yet, just the way memory is always contested: nothing is certain and nothing is permanent on this moving ground.

The first edition of this transient museum will be open during the duration of the 900mdpl (2019) exhibition featuring works by Anggun Priambodo | Dimaz Maulana | Kelompok Fotografi Kaliurang & Dito Yuwono | Edita Atmaja | Maryanto | Mella Jaarsma | Sandi Kalifadani | Ibnu Banu Harli | Barokah | and local archival material.
